Welcome to Bergen op Zoom

Halfway between the world cities, where Brabant meets Zeeland, lies the ancient pearl of Bergen op Zoom. Bergen op Zoom is a taste of culture, fun shopping and culinary delights in a historical ambiance. The extensive and varied range of shops in the compact centre with its medieval streets and squares offers many hours of shopping pleasure. The narrow streets, old squares and unique monuments tell the story of a rich and eventful past that goes back more than eight hundred years. There are more than 800 monuments in the city centre, of which more than two hundred are on the national monument list.

The oldest monument of the Marquis City is the Lievevrouwepoort, also called the Gevangenpoort. The building was part of the fortress walls around the city and later served as a prison. Around the Grote Markt there are more beautiful monuments to see: the Sint Gertrudiskerk with the Peperbus, the city theatre De Maagd and the monumental City Hall. The motto "Mille periculis supersum" (I will overcome a thousand dangers) on the Old City Hall refers to the wars and occupations that the city has suffered through the centuries. The Ravelijn Op den Zoom shows the city's fortified past. The underground passages (the Kazematten) are the last remnants of the famous Bergen fortress, built by Menno van Coehoorn. The Synagogue, which was built thanks to a donation from King William I, tells the Jewish past of Bergen op Zoom. After the restoration, ritual baths were discovered.

The pearl of the city is the city palace Het Markiezenhof. The former residential palace was built in the period between 1485 and around 1520, as a result of a number of renovations and extensions of the medieval court of the lords and marquises of Bergen op Zoom. The clients were Jan II and Jan III van Glymes, father and son, both lords of Bergen op Zoom. At the end of the fifteenth century, this noble Brabant family had become highly respected. The status they had acquired is reflected in the palatial character of the Markiezenhof. The Markiezenhof has had various functions over time, for example, the complex has been used in the past as a noble residential palace, administrative centre of the Marquisate, military hospital and barracks. In 1968 it was decided to open the building to the public by turning it into a museum. As you venture through this vast palace with its many halls, rooms, galleries, stair towers, courtyards and gardens, you will gain a good impression of the history of the city and the region.
